LINK REVIEW
Let's review the basic principles of setting up hyperlinks using NVU:
1. Type text you want to serve as hyperlink. Select text and click on the Link button.
2. Use the Link window to set up hyperlink properties. Be sure to type in "http://" for a on-line resource. Use the Choose File button to Link to another page of your website. If you want to hyperlink to another spot in your Home Page then you first need to set up an Anchor point using the Anchor button and then the drop down menu in the Link window.
3. After you Save your webpage check out how your hyperlinks work by using the Browse button. When you Save a page NVU will prompt you to type in a Title of the page. This is the text that appears in the upper left hand corner of the web browser window.
CAN YOU PICTURE THIS?
When inserting pictures into a website carefully consider the download time for large images. Create small versions, or thumbnails, on a page and then hyperlink them to the originals. See examples below.
A THOUSAND WAYS TO MANAGE PICTURES AND OTHER FANCY THEMES
Regardless of what program you use to create a website you need to practice good file/folder management for your website. All the picture and document files for a website should be stored in the same folder which makes it easier to upload to a web server host.
If you use Word or Publisher to insert pictures by utilizing the Insert > Picture menu.
Resize the picture using the handlebars on the edges.
Use the View>Toolbars>Picture to Compress and adjust enhancements.
Finally, hyperlink the resized, compressed image to the original.
Save your document as a "filename.doc" (Word) or "filename.pub" (Publisher) so that you may edit the contents of your website at a later date.
When you are ready to create the functional website you need to Save As a "filename.html" (Word) or Convert to Webpage (Publisher) much like Elements did in the demonstration above. With Word be sure to Save your Home Page as index.htm and all other pages with names to help you remember how to set up your hyperlinks. Publisher will do that for you.
Use NVU to create a picture gallery.
Use other software like Photoshop or script options to quickly generate a photo gallery or slideshow from a folder organized with pictures.
