WEBSITE DESIGN

Duncan Wardwell (duncan@cvuhs.org)

What a web we weave!

What are the elements of a good web page?

As you observe these sites, identify elements you would like in your own website. A website may be thought of as a series of pages, folders, or notebooks connected to each other through links. Links are the text or images that allow the browser.

Let's K.I.S.S. and decide what really works.

Create a blueprint for your website

Ultimately, a web designer is writing the content, inserting images, and organizing all the files (images, pages, etc.) into a folder.

**Create your own schematic tree and/or paper blueprint of your website**

To scroll or not to scroll? Some websites are a bunch of small webpages connected via hyperlinks where others are a a few large scrolls. Compare the CVU Home Page to the Access CVU Home Page.

The index.htm* file is the default file name for the "home page."  View the folder for a website you will start creating.

How can I create elements using different software?

MS Word allows a user to create a WEBSITE which is a collection of:

PAGES Go to File > New > Web Page to create a one page scroll.  Repeat for other linked pages.
TEXT Type just like normal
PICTURES Go to Insert>Picture
HYPERLINKS Select text and go to Insert>Hyperlink or right click

MS Publisher provides plenty of useful templates that allow you to fill in the specifics.  You lose some graphic control at first but are able to learn with training wheels.

NVU is a free download (http://nvudev.com/index.php) that looks and feels a lot like MS FrontPage (soon to be obsolete).  If the NVU site isn't working then you may find it from a John's Hopkins site.  Another nifty option is to get a portable NVU that you can keep on your thumb drive along with all your website folders.

This course will give you the experience of creating your own website using basic software menu & mouse commands.  You will be able to post your own site at the end of the course and gain a better understanding of the professional web design market.

Create a schematic drawing or tree diagram of all the different links you will create for your website.  Each week we'll demonstrate how to use specific software to incorporate elements of a successful web design.

How do I get my website posted on the web?

You need to register for a DOMAIN NAME and choose a WEB SERVER.
