The FYI on Skype

WHY SKYPE?

Skype is a software program that provides opportunities to make internet phone calls, video calls, as well as instant messaging and expanding communication options. Skype is not the only way utilize such communication but is the current Q-tip ear swab of the video calling market. You will find similar services & controls in Google or other software packages that might accompany your hardware (web camera). Check out Wikipedia's article.

PARTS ARE PARTS

Identify the important parts and functions of your Skype setup.

Computer w/ Internet Access

Is your computer on and connected to the internet?

Web Camera (or Web Cam)

All sorts of models to choose from! Just Google "web cam" or go to your local computer or office store.

Microphone

Same concept as above. Some Web cams and computers have built in microphones.

Skype (or other) Software

Go to www.Skype.com to download program for free. Your web cam might come with similar software. Or you can setup a Google account to accomplish similar results. Basically, you want to find out what other people are using in your video conferencing community so you can all login to one version!

Other Online Users

Set up an account (name & password) with Skype or other. Login to Skype. Be sure other members of your community also login so you can connect with them!

Some laptops (LIKE THE MINIS WE USE IN CLASS) HAVE THE WEB CAM AND MICROPHONE BUILT RIGHT IN!
jUST LOGIN TO SKYPE AND YOU ARE READY TO ROCK AND/OR ROLL!

 

SETUP & INSTALL

Find the file you downloaded from Skype and install software. If this has already been done, you should find a Skype logo on your Desktop or Programs.

SKYPE ACCOUNT

Setup your own Account using a username and a password you can remember (or put in a place you can find). You can use this account on any computer at anytime.


TEST SOUND/VIDEO

Welcome screen allows you to troubleshoot sound & video.

ECHO TEST

Test a voice message using the Echo Test.

SKYPE INTERFACE

Utililze the menus on the top, the Contact on the middle left, and the Call End User on the middle right.

CONTACTS

Search for existing Contact user names or use the New button to type in specific infomation.

CALL vs.VIDEO

You can make an traditional audio call to anyone (on a phone) but may be charged basic rates. Currently, video calls are free. Click on a Contact on the left hand side and then click on Video Call on the right hand side. Voila! You should be able to see yourself & your Contact in a few moments.

OTHER OPTIONS
