FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER

A digital camera provides instant feedback on the quality of your picture.  Be sure to immediately view your compositions and change camera controls to improve desired results.  Because there is no cost of film it is better to take more pictures in the here and now.  Once you download your pictures to a computer you can view them in greater detail and delete the ones you don't want to keep.

Practice these steps and you'll quickly learn how to store pictures efficiently.

  1.  Turn your camera off and connect it to the class computer using USB cord.
  2.  Turn camera on.   Click on My Computer and select your Camera.  See the thumbnail versions of your pictures by changing the View of the camera's folder window.
  3.  Select different pictures to download by utilizing the Ctrl key + mouse click then Edit > Copy.
  4.  Select a destination on your computer by clicking on Folders on the toolbar or View>Go To.  Choose My Documents or My Pictures.  Create a new folder by right clicking on a blank space or select File>New>Folder.
  5.  Select Edit > Paste once the window address displays the desired folder.
  6.  Right click on each picture in order to Rename it.  Be sure to include .jpg.

ONLINE ALBUMS

Digital images may be printed or viewed over a computer screen.  You can share your "magic moments" very easily with family and friends by setting up an account with a photo server.  Go to www.thephotogarden.com and experience the flexibility of on-line services.

MY BACK PAGES

Just because you own a digital camera doesn't mean you have to give up your old scrap booking hobbies.  In fact, you'll probably enjoy it even more with better results.  Follow the procedure below to create your own scrapbook page using the Elements software.

  1.  Create a folder of pictures you want on a scrapbook page by copying from an old folder and pasting into the new one.
  2.  Start Elements and select File > Print Layouts > Contact Sheet
  3.  Click Browse and find the location of the folder you just created.
  4.  Change the resolution to 300 pixels/in and make sure the Flatten All Layers is NOT checked.
  5.  Edit the number of columns and rows to fit the number of pictures you want on one page.
  6.  Click OK and watch the program do its stuff.
  7.  Use the Move tool to resize, rotate, and relocate your pictures.
  8.  Use the Text tool to type in text.
  9.  Use the Shape and painting tools to add desired effects.
  10. Don't foget to Save your scrapbook page and change the print Properties if you decide to print at home with photo quality paper.  Choose File > Save As to create a .jpg file that is easier to transfer for prints or include in other applications (like MS Word, PowerPoint).

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PRACTICE

The best way to become more efficient with any piece of software is to use it consistently.  Review old skills each time you start PS Elements and test drive some new tools or menus.  Don't forget to use the Undo History buttons or Windows.

To create a scrapbook page from scratch then select File>New to open a blank document.  Then File>Open any image you want to Move into the scrapbook page.  Learn more Elemental tricks by viewing Windows>How To or register for another Access to CVU offerings.
