Pottery -4 Great Times for 8 Weeks

Designed for learners of all skill levels, work on the wheel and/or learn new hand-building techniques. Create finished ceramic pieces with your own hands. This is a great way to try pottery or continue your budding skills. There will be open studio time from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. No classes Thanksgiving week. Holiday Ornament Workshop

Wednesday 6-8:00 pm 3 weeks Starts November 30

All levels are welcome in this workshop. We will create original ornaments using simple yet elegant hand-building techniques. Textures and underglazes will be used to enhance pieces. Everything will be fired before the holidays and ready to give as gifts or put up in your own home.

Basic Drawing for Adults

Monday 530-700p.m. 8 weeks Starts October 10

Drawing is all about seeing. This offering for adults is designed for those interested in beginning drawing techniques. Using graphite, you will explore with helpful exercises to aid in the understanding of fundamental drawing. Class covers perspective, contour, shading and composition. All paper and implements included.

Drawing – The Next Steps

Monday 7-830 p.m. 8 weeks Starts October 10

Continue improving your drawing skills with expert guidance. Students will build upon the fundamentals of line, shadow, perspective and composition using graphite and other materials to explore portraiture and more complex compositions. Prerequisite: a drawing class sometime in your life.

Still Life Drawing in Charcoal

Tuesday 8 weeks 630-8pm Starts October 11

This still life drawing class is for students that have already taken a beginning drawing class. Using compressed charcoal, focus will be on composition, tonal gradation and variation of line. This is the perfect practice class for students who want to hone their skills in a structured and supportive environment. Sketch pad and compressed charcoal included.

Glass Fused Pendant (13-19 years old)

2 Mondays 330-430 pm October 10 & 17

Designed for teenagers, this class will introduce fused glass techniques as participants choose their own designs for as many as a half dozen beautiful pendants. Keep them or give as Gifts. Transparent, opaque, and metallic glass will be fired and ready for pickup one week after last class. After completing this class, participants will have a new sense of the possibilities of glass fusion.

Photography – B&W Darkroom

Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m. 6 weeks Starts October 13

Designed for beginners, this is an introduction to black and white film developing and darkroom printing. The first class will be devoted to the basics of taking a decent shot. Info and handouts on techniques, procedures and chemistry will be covered. Develop your own film and prints. Please bring your own camera (point and shoot is fine). Extra darkroom lab time; Monday evenings.

Knitting for Beginners

Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m. 8 weeks Starts October 13

Knitting is relaxing, rewarding and fun! We will learn to cast on, knit, purl and much more in the Continental method while creating a beautiful and warm hat for this winter. Needles and pattern included. Nothing needed but enthusiasm for the first class. Shop for their own yarn after the first class.

Rug Hooking for Beginners

Thursday 6-8 p.m. 5 weeks Starts October 20

Learn the basics of rug hooking while creating a small project. Diane always has a great group to learn with. Topics covered include: tools, materials, design, wool quantity, color planning, basic dyeing techniques, and finishing your project. No supplies needed for first class. Hook and fabric kit included. Students will need to purchase wool and a hoop or frame after first class. Designed for high school and older.

Rug Hooking Design – The Basics

Have you hooked a rug? This is an introduction to designing your own projects, even if you think you are not an artist. Kathleen will guide those that never imagined they could design their own rugs to create a beautiful pattern ready to hook. Topics covered will include: inspiration, concept, design, drawing tricks, transferring to backing and color planning. Please bring your hook, frame, wool, and a 2 x 3 foot or less blank backing. Fee includes transfer material, templates, rulers, and Sharpies.

Sewing for Beginners - Afternoon

Tuesday 4-6 p.m. 5 weeks Starts October 11

Here’s your chance to learn to sew or to refresh your beginning skills. Participants will learn to construct a basic, yet beautiful garment. Students will have the opportunity to pick the style and fabric for their creations. Designed for those 11 through 111 years old. Use our machine or bring your own. Materials are extra and will be purchased on first day class field trip.

Sewing for Beginners - Evening

This is a full 8 weeks and will give learners time to finish a garment while learning the fundamentals of sewing. Bring your own machine in or use ours. Students will shop for material on their own after the first class. Louella brings years of home economics teaching experience to ensure a great class.

Quilting for Beginners

Have you always wanted to learn to quilt? This class is designed as a hands-on introduction along with discussion of quilting techniques, patterns, color, and theory. Make a small sampler quilt over the 5 weeks. Nothing needed for first class, but after the first week, participants will bring in materials of their own choosing to create the quilt they design.

Rustic Furniture -Adult Chair

Wednesday 6:00-8:00 p.m. 2 weeks October 12 & 19

Join Michael, a local artisan, in creating your own heirloom within 2 weeks. Build your own full-size rustic adult chair made of birch and alder. All materials and hardware included for assembling a chair to take home at the completion of this 2-week course. Participants should bring a reliable drill and several drill bits, hammer and measuring tape. Some tools will be available for loan. Dozens of first-time builders have made these sturdy, unique chairs in previous courses here at CVU.

Rustic Furniture -Child's Chair

Wednesday 6:00-8:00 p.m. 2 weeks October 26 & Nov 2

Build an heirloom of birch and alder for your favorite child. `All materials and hardware are included: participants should bring a power drill and bits, a hammer and a tape measure. Some tools will be available for loan. This scaled-down version of the adult chair may be customized, and will surely be treasured as have the many others made through the CVU Access program.

Garlic Braider's Stool/Side table

Wednesday 6:00-8:00 p.m. 2 weeks November 9 & 16

An easy-to-build birch and lumber seat that could be used as a small table. Inspired by the Fall harvest, this stool is both sturdy and practical. Participants provided with all materials and hardware for their own project: bring a power drill, drill bits and a hammer. A few tools will be available for loan. A great entry-level introduction to wood-working in two weeks.

Flower Arranging – Fresh Fall Basket Centerpiece

Wednesday 6:30-8:30 p.m. 1 night October 26

Learn new techniques to create this beautiful table adornment. This take home piece will be filled with fresh product as well as incorporate dried materials for falls’ vivid colors. The arrangement will sit in a high quality woven twig basket that can be reused for many years to come. Just in time for Halloween activities. All Materials provided.

Cake Decorating I

Designed for beginners, learn to decorate cakes using professional techniques. This course is the first in a series of Wilton designed courses. Fee covers Wilton decorating kit and book for beginners that are yours to keep. Cake II begins November 8, following Cake I. Dumpling Dim Sum

Celebrate an evening on the eastern end of the Silk Road where each morsel is full of flavor and wrapped in a succulent package. It is easier than you think! The evening workshop focuses on authentic ingredients available in Vermont, gives some simple techniques to make food look like art, and guides in the preparation of three dim sum courses: Shrimp and Ginger Shu Mai, Three Mushroom Dumpling with sesame ginger dipping sauce, Pork Wonton with chili garlic dipping sauce. Depending how hungry the group is, there is usually enough to take a taste home.

Guitar for Beginners –Thursday Afternoon

This class is designed for those with little or no experience, 11 to 111 years old.  Participants will learn basic acoustic guitar skills and work on learning songs.  Musical sheets will be provided for practice outside of class.  Mike, a CVU educator, will have everyone playing music.  Bring your own guitar and, if available, an electronic tuning fork.

Learn the beginnings of conversational Spanish. If you have taken Spanish sometime in your life or are very strong in another romance language, then this is the class for you. Practice the language in situations to be encountered on a trip to any Spanish speaking country. A book to work from will be distributed at the first class and will be yours to keep. Move and Groove (2-4 years old)

Tuesday 4:30-5:15 p.m. 8 weeks Starts October 11

A great introduction to the benefits of movement for children ages 2-4. Students are introduced to ballet, jazz, world dance, hip-hop and gymnastics in a fun and relaxed environment using props such as scarves, balls and parachutes. Kym has 16 years of experience teaching children's dance as well as a degree in early childhood development. Parents are welcome to stay during class if they wish.

Comfortable clothing and bare feet or ballet/jazz shoes recommended if tights are worn.

Fused Windchime Project For Older Kids (7-12 year olds)

Thursday 330-430 pm November 10 & 17

Learn the basics of glass fusion by making a durable and beautiful windchime with Carol from the Human Hand Gallery. Your own fused glass tile design is baked in a kiln and will be ready to string and assemble the second week. Participants will come away with a new understanding about glass fusion and possibilities of creating more art through this fascinating medium.

Knitting for Little Hands 1st, 2nd, 3rd Graders

Have your child learn to knit in only 4 weeks. Project based, participants will create a small chicken, cat or purse in this real fun offering. All supplies included and everyone will take home needles to keep. This class is designed for children currently in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. Margo herself started to knit when she was 7 years old. The Information Technology Staff at Access provides; Hands-on experience, a vigorous mix of handouts, on-line resources, class demos, CVU’s computers with Windows XP, small class sizes, and individual attention. Our staff (I.T. professionals, district teachers, community volunteers, and current CVU students) is dedicated to improving your computer literacy and confidence. Our goal is to constantly provide the community with applicable courses at an affordable cost. Help us design the best computer training program in the area by providing feedback on current or future offerings.

Stir up some holiday cheer with family and friends when you create an engaging and stunning form letter. Learn the basics of MS Word menus as you polish a final draft letter that includes fancy backgrounds, bullets, pictures, and more. Learn the basics of data entry, cell formats, mouse operations, simple formulas, and sorting techniques as students use MS Excel to manage bank accounts. A terrific body-sculpting program based on the teachings of Joseph Pilates. This course uses mat exercises to develop core strength and control, particularly in the abdominals and back. Backyard Astronomy

This is a two-week workshop designed for beginners. Participants will learn their way around the sky and be able to recognize constellations. Frank can often be found setting up his telescope in public places for others to peer into the heavens. Classes are held indoors where the skies are always perfect. Writers’ Workshop

Mondays 6-7:30 p.m. 4 weeks Starts October 10

Attention all writers! Turn writing from a matter of solitary suffering into a matter of public celebration. Participate in a workshop that will help you produce your finished piece of writing. Our weekly sessions will guide writers as we brainstorm writing topics, refine our ideas through journaling, craft rough drafts, and revise through peer editing conferences. Each evening's session will include discussions of style and revision tactics as well as serve as a sound-board for personal writing issues. Basketball Referee Certification

Monday and Thursday 6:30-9:00 p.m. 4 weeks Starts October 31

Interested in learning to referee basketball? Want to join the largest association of basketball officials in the world? Classes will be starting in November that will allow you to do both. Learn the basic rules of basketball to prepare for certification test to become a member of the VT Board of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO). IAABO provides officials for every high school basketball game officiated in Vermont. Dates: Oct 31, Nov. 3,7,10, 14, 17, 21 and test on 28. Fee: $50.

Introduction to Writing for Children and Teens

Have you always wanted to write a book for children? This 8-week course is a good way to start. We will cover the basics of writing picture books, magazine fiction/non-fiction, and beginning a novel. Wild in Vermont -Animal Rescue and Intervention Workshop

Presented by Wild In Vermont, Inc., a non-profit organization committed to the support and profession of wildlife rehabilitation, its practitioners, and conservation education in the State of Vermont, this is an informative hour for anyone in our community. Caring for wildlife is very different from caring for domestic animals, and this is where wildlife rehabilitators come in. Information on the criteria for need to rescue, contact persons in Vermont, license and permits, laws and regulations, and what a caring public can do to help.

Water Quality Testing-Can you swim here or drink it?

This is a two week workshop for folks who are interested in understanding how water quality is evaluated. Participants will perform water tests and learn to analyze the data. If you live near a river (LaPlatte, Lewis Creek), pond (Shelburne) or lake (Sunset, Iroquois, Champlain) this class will allow you to better understand the ecosystem and the impact of activities in the surrounding landscape. Is Race Real? From colorblindness to “colortalk”: A Socratic Seminar

Join Denise, currently finishing her masters in education, in this dynamic group activity to better understand how the social construct of race affects all of us within human society. We are born into a world where assumptions and distortions create barriers to cultural pluralism based on democratic principles. This course offers an opportunity for interested people to study and dialog about an issue that is often seen as taboo. Through the Socratic method, participants will investigate the foundations of institutional racism using cutting-edge scholarship, a variety of media resources and open discussion. We will view the PBS series ‘Race: the Power of an Illusion,’ with ample time to process the information. Please bring an open mind and a willingness to learn about issues that affect all of us today.

We will examine how things are not as they appear to be and discuss the nature of reality, truth, and personal perspectives. "Parenting for Success: Dealing with the Tough Issues"

Back by popular demand, CY—Connecting Youth will offer a FREE five-week program to help you polish your parenting skills and learn how to face some of the more challenging issues such as drug use, relationships, curfew, etc. This nationally-recognized program covers how to: strengthen family bonds; improve communication; set clear expectations and guidelines; express and control anger in healthy ways; and increase your child's participation in the family. Two trained and experienced facilitators will lead the course, which will be taught in two-hour sessions, offered once a week for five weeks. The course will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, beginning in mid-October and running through mid-November. Depending on the level of interest, we will offer one course just for parents of teens (grades 8 through 11) on Thursday nights at CVU and another for parents of younger students (grades 3 through 7) in Shelburne and Williston. Registration is required and space is limited to 15 parents per course. The cost is $20 and includes a Family Guidebook that parents get to keep. Some scholarships are also available.

It’s Time to Talk -How to talk with your kids about sex, sexuality and other sensitive subjects

Are you a parent of a 10-14 year old worried about having THAT TALK with your kids? Do you want to create an open dialogue in your family but are worried that you won’t feel comfortable? Research has demonstrated that talking to your children early and often about issues relating to sexuality builds the foundation for an open, honest dialogue throughout their teen years.
