Picture all the possibilities

FINGER EXERCISES

Choose a close subject with significant detail.  Take two pictures each with different image qualities.  Observe the results via the digital zoom on your camera.

IMAGE QUALITY FILE SIZE USE
FINE (SHQ, ****) LARGE Good prints but not as many pictures fit on memory card.
NORMAL (HQ, ***) MEDIUM When a small Coke won't do but you don't want to drink a large.
BASIC (SQ, **) SMALL Efficient storage and internet transfer but limited resolution.
It's easy to downgrade image quality using computer software.

Use auto-exposure features and the LCD display to constantly analyze your results.  Delete any pictures you know you don’t want right away.  Once your memory card is close to full then it’s time to download copies to your computer.

FROM HARDWARE TO SOFTWARE

Behold the digital powers you now possess as you organize folders, explore print options, and mop up any mistakes you might have overlooked while taking the picture.  Unless your last name's Iverson, then we're talking about practice in order to get better.

Practice these steps and you'll quickly learn how to store pictures efficiently.

  1.  Turn your camera off and connect it to the class computer using USB cord.
  2.  Turn camera on.   Click on My Computer and select your Camera.  See the thumbnail versions of your pictures by changing the View of the camera's folder window.
  3.  Select different pictures to download by utilizing the Ctrl key + mouse click then Edit > Copy.
  4.  Select a destination on your computer by clicking on Folders on the toolbar or View>Go To.  Choose My Documents or My Pictures.  Create a new folder by right clicking on a blank space or select File>New>Folder.
  5.  Select Edit > Paste once the window address displays the desired folder.  Turn off your camera if you are done downloading.
  6.  Right click on each picture in order to Rename it.  Be sure to include .jpg.

Use the software included with your camera, already installed on your computer, or other graphic enhancement programs to view and enhance the quality of your photographs.

SOME HINTS ON SHARING NICELY

Take the time to observe the menus and windows of the software you use to download your pictures.  Be sure to organize your pictures in folders or albums that will allow you to retrieve them from sight memory.

Prints

Take pictures with highest image quality.  Be sure to properly set Properties of printer, paper, and feed.

Email

Take pictures with lowest image quality.  Be sure to attach the picture.  Don’t be surprised if the recipient claims it’s too large for the screen.

On-line services

Create backup copies of your precious memories.  This is the most efficient way to accomplish many digital chores:  storing, sharing, printing.

Websites

Similar to above except you create your own on-line catalogs.  Be sure to create thumbnail albums that link to individual high quality pictures.

Slideshows

Use other software (Powerpoint, Elements) to create audio-visual presentations.

Always keep copies of your pictures on your computer and one other location (CD, flash drive, on-line storage, etc.)
